Today we bring a book summary and review of another timeless classic that is an amazing read. Here is the story summary of a 10 year old orphan named Jane Eyre.

But before we come to the book summary of Jane Eyre and her story let’s know a little bit about the author.

The Author: Charlotte Bronte

Charlotte Bronte was a 19th-century writer, poet, and novelist best known as the author of Jane Eyre1. She was born on April 21, 1816, in Thornton, a small West Yorkshire village in England2. She was born into a clerical family that valued education; she became the family chronicler and champion2.

Jane Eyre was published under her pen name “Currer Bell” on 19 October 1847 by Smith, Elder & Co. of London3. The book became a quick hit1. Some surmised from the writing that Currer Bell was a woman.

The Book Summary of Jane Eyre

Once upon a time, there was this girl named Jane Eyre. She was only 10 years old and didn\’t have any parents, so she lived with her uncle\’s family at a fancy place called Gateshead. But her aunt, who was really mean and bitter, thought Jane was a burden. She made her cousins treat Jane badly and even locked her in a creepy room called the \”red-room.\” Eventually, Jane got sent to a boarding school called Lowood after standing up against her bully cousin.

Lowood was run by a super mean headmaster named Mr. Brocklehurst. He punished the kids for the tiniest things, and life there was really tough. But Jane made a friend named Helen and had a nice teacher named Miss Temple. Still, the school was in bad shape. They didn\’t have enough food, clean water, or warm clothes. Mr. Brocklehurst said it was to make them better Christians, but he was actually making money from cutting corners. Then a terrible sickness called typhus broke out, and many girls got really sick. Jane\’s friend Helen sadly died in her arms.

After the sickness, things got better at Lowood when new leaders came in. Jane stayed there for eight years, first as a student and then as a teacher. But then she got a job as a governess at a big house called Thornfield. She was supposed to take care of a French girl named Adèle, who was Mr. Rochester\’s ward.

Jane met Mr. Rochester when he fell off his horse and she helped him. They started having these deep conversations and realized they had a lot in common. Jane had feelings for Mr. Rochester, but he was planning to marry someone else named Blanche Ingram. But as time went on, Mr. Rochester changed his mind and proposed to Jane instead.

Their wedding got interrupted by a guy named Mr. Mason. It turned out that Mr. Rochester was already married to a woman named Bertha Mason. But she was really sick and crazy, so he locked her in the attic with a caretaker named Grace Poole. Mr. Rochester asked Jane to run away with him, but she said no because she didn\’t want to be his mistress. She ran away from Thornfield.

Jane wandered around until she found a house where three siblings lived: Diana, Mary, and St. John Rivers. St. John figured out who Jane really was and told her that her uncle, John Eyre, had died and left her a bunch of money. It turned out that St. John and Jane were actually cousins. Jane was happy to have family and decided to share the money with them.

St. John wanted to go to India as a missionary and asked Jane to come with him. But he didn\’t love her; he just thought she would make a good wife for a missionary. Jane said she would go to India but couldn\’t marry him because they didn\’t love each other.

Soon after, Jane heard Mr. Rochester\’s voice calling her from far away. She rushed back to Thornfield and found it burned down. At an inn, she learned that Bertha had set the house on fire and died. Mr. Rochester got hurt and lost his sight. Jane found him living in a cottage in the woods. She told him she loved him and was happy to stay with him forever. They got married, and eventually, Mr. Rochester started to see a little bit again. They had a baby boy together, and it was a happy ending!
