The Storyline Summary

The story follows Dorothy Gale, a young farm girl from Kansas, who is swept away by a tornado to the magical Land of Oz.

When Dorothy wakes up in the beautiful, colorful Land of Oz, three very short men approach her. They are joined by the Witch of the North, who thanks Dorothy for killing the Witch of the East. The evil Witch of the East was killed when Dorothy’s hut fell upon the Witch.

Then she meets a Scarecrow who wants a brain, a Tin Man who wants a heart, and a Cowardly Lion who wants courage. The conversation between the Lion and Dorothy was indeed very amusing. It’s a fairy tale, after all.

When a Lion attacks Toto, the dog Dorothy loves, Dorothy slaps the Lion hard. “You ought to be ashamed of yourself, a big beast like you, to bite a poor little dog”, Dorothy roared. So the Lion cowered as he is a cowardly Lion. They have a conversation on how he became a cowardly Lion too!

But let’s stick to the storyline.

The Journey

Together, they set off on a journey to the Emerald City to meet the Wizard of Oz, who they believe can grant their wishes.

Along the way, they must face many challenges, including the Wicked Witch of the West, who wants to kill Dorothy and steal her magic shoes. But with the help of their new friends, Dorothy and her companions eventually reach the Emerald City and meet the Wizard.

The Wizard tells them that he can grant their wishes, but only if they first help him defeat the Wicked Witch of the West. Dorothy and her friends agree, and they set off to the Wicked Witch\’s castle.

After a long and dangerous battle, Dorothy and her friends are victorious. The Wicked Witch is defeated. And Dorothy is able reunite with her friends.

Together they head back to Oz to ask the Wizard to fulfill his end of their bargain. They discover that the great and powerful Oz is just an old man who uses disguises to appear to be a great wizard.

However, the next morning, Oz gives the Scarecrow a new head filled with a brain made of bran, pins, and needles. He gives the Tin Woodman a silk heart stuffed with sawdust. He gives the Lion a courage potion. The Wizard agrees to take Dorothy and Toto home in a hot air balloon, but it flies away before Dorothy and Toto board it.

Dorothy is told that Glinda, the good Witch of the South, may be able to help her. After a taxing journey, they reach the land of the South. Glinda tells Dorothy that the silver shoes she wears can take her anywhere she wants to go. Dorothy clicks her heels together three times and wishes to go home to Aunt Em.

She whirls through the air back to her family in Kansas.

The characters in the book are well-thought out and very amusing. They symbolize a lot of things that we can relate to. Dorothy is a plucky and resourceful heroine. Dorothy learns a lot about herself and her own strengths on her journey to the Emerald City. Dorothy\’s friends help her to see that she is already brave and capable, and she learns to accept herself for who she is.

Her friends the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion are all memorable and lovable characters. The book also explores themes of friendship, courage, and self-acceptance.

The Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Lion all do not have self-belief and think that there’s something missing in them. And when the Wizard gives them what they need even as just a make believe, they accept and believe the Wizard. They’re happy they got what they wished for even though in reality they didn’t get anything!!
